Working with Archetypes

Archetypes are primordial, unconscious images or behavioural patterns of the instincts that pertain to the unconscious. Mother, for example, is an archetype and when you ask anyone from anywhere in the world what mother is, you will get an answer. We know these archetypes as they form part of our psyche.

Another way of explaining archetypes is that they are mediators or bridges between the invisible and visible. They allow us to act in the world in a specific way. Because they are unconscious images of the instincts, we are required to bring these archetypes to the light of consciousness, to channel the incredible energies that are bound up in them into some form of expression.

I work with a few simple archetypes of father, mother, boychild, and girlchild. This reflects the organization of our universe and ourselves. They reflect the four elements of fire, air, water, and earth or the spiritual, mental, emotional, and physical.

These archetypes constitute a simple and clear organization of the psyche that can help us to understand ourselves, others, and the world much better, and they provide a blueprint for action and healing.
