Heart Meditation

Heart meditation is simply meditating in the heart. There is a place in the heart, which is not a place or location, where we can access a deeper part of ourselves. It is enduring and not subject to the chaos of life. It is open, clear, pristine, spacious, at peace, and filled with wisdom and love. Here we can connect to our deeper self.

We can go to this place in the heart with our intention and attention. We can commune here and ask questions, explore challenges and receive insight, understanding, and realization. And we can just listen and see what arises. The heart may present us with the way forward, sometimes facilitated by imagery.

This place in the heart is well known in many religious/spiritual traditions. Sometimes it is called the Secret Chamber of the Heart. And that is what it is. A secret place that many don't know about.

In the Buddhist tradition, this is the indestructible diamond of the heart that is in the middle of the lotus flower representing the body. The indestructible diamond is the essence of our being, that which cannot be destroyed and is always the same.

When we search for our peace and happiness, we tend to look outside of ourselves to others and things but the treasure is inside, in the heart, well hidden. In this sense, therapy is the search for this diamond hidden so very close to us. And when we find it, encrusted with bad habits, all sorts of conditioning, pain, and unhelpful beliefs, then the work begins of cutting and sanding away that hard mineral crust to reveal the beautiful, scintillating diamond that we are at heart.

So it is very important to commune with the heart. It has a different perspective on life and our challenges. And, most importantly, it is free. The heart experience is holistic and includes the body, although I still recommend consciously connecting to the body.
